Peregrine: a musical depiction of the soaring bird of prey as it hovers and dips and glides over the air currents. The 4:3 rhythmic relationship throughout the tune evokes a sense of weightlessness and grace over the given meter of 3/4, the aim for the soloists and accompanists is to create this feeling of hovering above the beat, superimposing the divisions of 4 against 3 and obscuring the barlines.
The guitar chords range from closed voicings to open voicings with the added aim of creating an expansive view of the piece which is also best achieved with varied dynamics throughout the phrase lengths. There is an odd number of bars in the theme as the last bar elides with the opening bar thereby generating a feeling of cyclic continuity breaking any sense of formal cadence as the four bar phrases are interrupted by a three bar phrase to meet up with the opening gestures.
The bass figure at the F#m section is a hemiola, a commonly used device in modal music of the ars nova and renaissance eras whereby the meter of 3/2 is superimposed over 3/4 creating a division of 3 groups of 2 beats rather than 2 groups of 3 beats. This adds further flex to the meter and invites the improvisor to explore more displacements and note groupings.
