Biography
Nick Karpin is a Brisbane based saxophonist with a love for jazz, composition and improvisation. In 2020 he released his debut album "River City" which highlighted his originals, well-known jazz standards and works by other Australian jazz composers. He maintains an active role as a performer and contributor within Brisbane’s vibrant jazz community, regularly performing with his jazz quartet and as a freelance saxophonist for other ensembles.
Nick found his way to music through first being given a guitar for his 14th birthday. This led to him becoming fascinated by the improvised blues-rock music of artists like Jimmi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton. As Nick delved deeper into improvised music artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Yussef Lateef and Bill Evans had a profound effect on him. This culminated in Nick switching to the tenor saxophone as his main instrument.

In 2017 he graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Music in jazz saxophone performance. During his time at the conservatorium he took one-on-one lessons from many of the faculty's distinguished teachers e.g. Isaac Hurren, Diana Tolmie and John Stefulj. Since graduating Nick has worked as an instrumental tutor for many Brisbane schools and academies. He is particularly passionate towards teaching jazz to his students and has plans to release educational jazz resources within the near future.
