Biography

Minnie Hill is an award winning composer, arranger and saxophonist. Minnie's "virtuosic knowledge of the richest sounds possible in the saxophone and trombone sections" (The Australian) makes her one of Melbourne's most exciting up and coming arrangers/composers. 2021 saw Minnie release her debut big band album, 'The Remarkable Dave Brubeck' to great acclaim. This album recorded with the 'Minnie Big Band' features many of Melbourne's top jazz musicians, with a guest appearance from Grammy-nominated trombonist Marshall Gilkes on her composition 'Remarkable'. 'The Remarkable Dave Brubeck' was featured as 'Album Of The Week' on ABC Jazz in July 2021 while the band was shortlisted in the 2021 'Music Victoria Awards' under the category 'Best Jazz Act'.

Minnie has also been one of the recipients of the ABC's inaugural 'Composer Commissioning Fund' award. This funding will allow her to record a new set of compositions in a small group jazz setting, featuring musicians such as Angela Davis, Jordan Murray and Sam Anning. 2020 saw Minnie win 1st place in the inaugural Musician's Arranging Guild of Australia 'National Youth Arranging' Award with her arrangement of 'Play Crazy for Me' .

As a performer, Minnie regularly leads ensembles at sold out shows at the Paris Cat Jazz Club in Melbourne. These shows are focused around unique and exciting arrangements of movie soundtracks or songwriters from the past. Minnie has also performed alongside the Jazz Melbourne Studio Youth Band and Paris Cat Big Band. This has given her the opportunity to play with international artists such as Rich DeRosa, Dick Oatts, Drew Zaremba, Jose Aponte and Tanya Darby.

Minnie latest album ‘There is Light’ by the Minnie Collective was released in November 2022 with ABC Jazz.
