Biography

Steve was educated in classical piano and choral music from age 4 until he completed high school, at which point he became a working musician, and continued to educate himself in jazz piano and composition.  Long regarded as one of Australia’s finest jazz pianists, Steve settled in Byron Bay in 1999, from where he maintains a busy performance schedule whilst teaching jazz piano at the Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane, and Keyboard Studies in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University.

Steve recently received an Honorable Mention in the Jazz category of the 2012 International Songwriting Competition, for "A Ticket Out O’ Here". Australian jazz icon Tony Gould has described Russell’s "An Anthem For Amy" as “…one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever come across… a kind of miniature masterpiece.”
