Biography

ALEX PERTOUT is a multi-award winning artist whose playing has graced number one charting singles and albums and many award-winning recordings. He is recognised as one of Australia's leading creative percussionists and with credits on hundreds of albums, soundtracks and jingles is undeniably one of Australia's most recorded musicians. As a versatile percussionist he has also attained credits as a member of numerous television orchestras, theatre orchestras, in countless live performances covering a wide musical spectrum as well as a respected educator and academic. In tandem he has developed a personal creative artistic career as a multi-instrumentalist recording artist, composer, producer, author and ensemble leader.

As a founding member of the Australian Art Orchestra led by Paul Grabowsky he has toured Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, has recording, performance and television orchestra credits with an array of artists including Powderfinger, Badi Assad, Shane Howard, James Morrison, Paul Kelly, Casiopea, Jackson Browne, Little River Band w/John Farnham, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Daryl Braithwaite, Goanna, The Black Sorrows, Tony Gould, Dave Valentin, Ute Lemper, Charlelie Couture, Redgum, The Commodores, Kutcha Edwards, Tommy Emmanuel, Tina Arena, Goanna, Kate Ceberano, Broderick Smith, Tom E Lewis, Brian Brown, Mondo Rock and Cezary Skubiszewski among many others. His percussive work can also be heard on numerous motion pictures including It Runs In The Family, Empire Falls, Crocodile Dundee, Gross Misconduct, Aladdin: The Return Of Jafar to name a few and in the theatre he has been a featured percussionist in The Lion King. 



He has produced albums as a multi-instrumentalist performer/composer and his productions feature an outstanding cast of national and international artists including Mike Stern, Tom Coster, Dave Valentin, Tommy Emmanuel, Mark Levine, Raul Rekow, Hossam Ramzy, Paul Grabowsky, Pancho Amat, Edsel Gomez, Justo Pelladito, Tom E Lewis, William Roblejo, Christine Sullivan, Mike Bukovsky, Joe Chindamo, Cesar Lopez, David Jones and Leonard Grigoryan. In 2015 he was awarded the 'Premio Internacional' at the 2015 Cuban Music Awards for his production of the album ‘Tales To Tell’. He toured Mexico and Cuba on an invitation from the XX Cubadisco Festival held in Havana, Cuba with support from an Australia Council International Touring Grant.

Alex is the author of 'Sight Reading: The Rhythm Book' published by respected US publishers Mel Bay Inc, is a regular contributor to Drumscene Magazine and is endorsed internationally by Meinl percussion, Zildjian cymbals, Remo heads and Vic Firth sticks. He graduated with High Distinction from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), holds a Master of Philosophy in Music degree from the Australian National University (ANU) and is a Senior Lecturer in the Jazz & Improvisation Department at the Faculty of Arts and Music, University of Melbourne.
